Grenoble Mountain Film Meeting November 23, 2007

Finally, I could download the pictures to send this post on my "petzlblog"!!
How again was amazing this week of adventures and extremes sports!
1500 people every night and even more :-O

De nouveau, nous avons eu de superbes soirées d'aventures et de sports extrêmes durant toute la semaine!

For sure, they invited great people: Sharma, Horn, Beaugey and his team, Navalamenca's Actor from years seventies...
Organizer Yves Exbrayat from Mountain Missions of Grenoble city and Antoine Haincourt from Petzl Communication crazy bet on fulling the huge concert area of "Summum"!!
They did it!!!
3500 people inside the summum surprised by Michele Deschamps first Violin in Paris Opera playing national French "Marseillaise" and then Sough Africa and Switzerland’s hymn’s to introduce the terrible Mike Horn!!!
How great was this last evening.

Bien sûr ils ont fait venir des invités de marque: Sharma, Horn, Beaugey et son équipe, les comédiens des années 70 du film Navalamenca...
Les organisateurs Yves Exbrayat de la Mission Montagne de la ville de Grenoble et Antoine Haincourt de Petzl communication avaient fait le pari fou de remplir l'immense salle de concert du "Summum"!!
Ils l'ont fait!!
3500 personnes assises et surprises par Michèle Deschamps premier vilon de l'opéra de Paris jouant "La Marseillaise", puis les hymnes Sud-Africains et Suisse pour introduire le terrible Mike Horn!
Une excellente dernière soirée.

Banff Mountain Film Festival November 14, 2007

Well, It's not climbing 9b like Dani Andrada! But it's also a long work along a year working hard to do a climbing movie!
So, to be in the Banff Mountain Film Festival final competition for the best climbing film of the year is an other step!
King Lines won this award but no pain for me, I was very proud to show there "Vertical Desert"; moreover the day of my birthday 3rd Novembre partying with my friend Timmy O’Neil.

Bien sûr, ce n'est pas faire du 9b comme Dani Andrada! Mais c'est aussi un grand investissement durant l'année pour réaliser un film de grimpe!
Alors être sélectionné pour la compétition finale du Banff Mountain Film Festival dans la catégorie du meilleur film de grimpe de l'année est une étape de plus.
King Lines a gagné cette récompense, mais ce n'est pas une déception pour moi, j'ai été très fier de projeter là-bas "Un Désert Vertical"; d'autant plus le jour de mon anniversaire célébré avec Timmy O’Neil.

Leviathan November 5, 2007

- Ice climbing - Multi-pitch

What is a Leviathan ?

This is a long, thin snake-like dragon who controls the power of water. It looks similar to a Japanese dragon; witch is usually associated with water rather than fire.

And actually it’s the name of a new route, all ice climb, in the Mont Rundle south of Banff (Alberta, Canada). I was very lucky to be in Banff at the right time. So a big thanks to Steeve an Eric, two local mountain guides who share with me this long day doubting about thin ice missing! It was very cold because of the wind, and we had also a few surprises in the three hours approch, like we had to fixe a roll problem on our way back!

That was very fun and friendly to climb with Eric Dumérac, cause more than a friend, he is my second cousin. He is also guiding (ice-climbing, mountaineering, and skiing in the Rockies).

The route is about 250m high (7 rappel to go down), 8 pitches, last one grade 5+). A few cruxes were scary, cause not so well protected, with poor ice. But the two last pitches were so beautiful to climb! Last one was one of the most amazing pitches I have ever done! It was all Ice climable, steep and safe, for I think a 5+ technical difficulty.

Qu’est ce qu’un Leviathan ?

C'est un long dragon-serpent, qui contrôle la force de l’eau. Il ressemble au dragon Japonais; qui est normalement associé à la force du feu plutôt que l’eau.

Mais c’est aussi le nom d’une nouvelle voie, tout en glace, sur le Mont Rundle au Sud de Banff (Alberta, Canada). J’ai été très chanceux d’être à Banff au bon moment ! Alors un grand merci à Steve et Eric, avec qui j’ai partagé cette longue journée, doutant de cette fine glace. Ça a été un jour extrêmement froid à cause du vent, et nous avons eu quelques surprises durant les trois heures d'approche, comme une crevaison sur le chemin du retour !

C’était d’autant plus convivial de grimper avec Eric Dumérac, car en fait, c’est mon cousin issu de germain qui est aussi guide (glace, montagne, ski dans les Rocheuses).

La voie fait environ 250m de haut (7rappels, 8 longueurs, la dernière côte 5+). Plusieurs passages clef sont exposés et risqués car peu protégeable à cause d’une glace très fine. Mais les deux dernières longueurs furent un régal à grimper ! La dernière en particulier qui est l’une des plus belle longueur que j’ai grimpée! Toute en glace, sur des pétales étonnant, légèrement surplombante mais bien protégeable, pour une difficulté technique en grade 5+ je pense.

Canada film festivals October 31, 2007

A Vertical Desert film I directed in 2006 has been selected at 6th Montréal film festival and famous Banff Mountain film festival!
The movie got the "Extreme Adventure” awards in Montréal on the 27th October. Nice achievement for me to be recognized here.
A Vertical Desert talks about climbing in Mali. Climbing Harmatan Rodeo, this American route, set and bolted in 97 by Todd Skinner, Paul Piana, Scott Hilton... is no easy thing. Strong Harmattan wind coming from Sahel desert, a searing sun, punishing hit, sand in the eyes and tenacious thirst, can combine to drive away even the most determinated climbers! I did the first free climb ascent of the all pitches (5.12a up to 5.13b, 14 pitches for 450m). Culture of people living in the Gourma mountains and bush, forms the background of the film.

Welcome in Canada in autumn. Let's visit first the Canada's parliament in Ottawa and the south view from Mont Royal in Montréal.


Le film "Un Désert Vertical" que j'ai réalisé en 2006 a été sélectioné au 6ème festival de Montréal et au célèbre festival de Banff!
Le film a reçu le prix de "l'Aventure Extrême" à Montréal le 27 Octobre. Une belle récompense et reconnaissance.
"Un Désert Vertical" parle d'escalade au Mali. Grimper "Harmattan Rodéo", cette voie Américaine ouverte et équipée en 97 par  Todd Skinner, Paul Piana, Scott Hilton... n'est pas une mince affaire. La puissance  du vent de "l'Harmattan" venant du Sahel, un soleil de plomb, une chaleur harassante, du sable plein les yeux et la soif qui tenaille constamment peuvent se combiner et repousser les grimpeurs les plus déterminés! J'ai fait la première ascension en libre de toutes les longueurs (7a à 8a, sur 450m). En arrière plan de l'escalade, vous découvrirez la culture des habitants vivant dans les montagnes et la brousse du Gourma.

Bienvenue en automne au Canada, avec d'abord une visite du Parlement à Ottawa la capitale du pays, et une vue plongeante de Montréal depuis le mont Royal.

Agnes Fouilleux, talking about Tibet and Chinese incredible pressing on Tibet people. Then we saw her movie "Tibet Clandestine". To make this movie, she stayed three month in Tibet and was in a dangerous trek, with a camera hidden from Chinese authorities, in search of last Tibetans of Lhassa. A touching and shocking portrait of a stolen country, a smothered culture and a people crying out for their freedom.

Agnes Fouilleux, Parle du Tibet et de l'incroyable pression Chinoise sur le peuple Tibétain. Puis nous avons vu son film "Tibet Clandestin". Pour faire ce film, elle est restée trois mois au Tibet dans un trek dangereux, avec une caméra cachée aux autorités Chinoise, à la recherche des derniers tibétains de Lhassa. C'est un portrait touchant et choquant d'un pays volé, d'une culture étouffée et d'un peuple qui pleure sa liberté.

With so many scheduled evenings, I almost feel like a rock star! ;-)

Actually I am presenting my movie Un Désert Vertical in several French climbing gyms. A great movie not to be missed, especially projecting amazing exposure on a large screen.

New route in Bob Marley Wall October 13, 2007

- Red River Gorge - Rock climbing - RocTrip

It's done! I did the first ascent of “El encuentro” on Friday 12th October, just five minute before Mickey Fuselier did the first free climb of "Fifty Words for pumped".

Finally I propose 5.13b/8a to grade this route. So cool the holds are better than I thought so it's really climbable for many climbers, even if holds are a bit fragile, there are plenty of crimpers and pockets in this 40° steep.

Thank you Dani for your motivating support to everybody. This man, Dani Andrada, is an incredible machine to climb. Moreover, he is el animal, giving a positive energy to everybody. It was a great day climbing with him, Mickael Fuselier, Chris Sharma, Gérôme Pouvreau... All those nice people and good friends it's good to be with.












It was a good day for the Petzl team.

"El Encuentro" is born October 12, 2007

- Red River Gorge - Rock climbing - RocTrip

We are back to Bob Marley Wall in "RRG".

I finish to bolt El Encuentro: a very nice climbs around 35m high, and it seems that it's not so hard. Hard to say when you never climb a route! ;-)

Finally with a nice attempt late this afternoon, I guess I could send it tomorrow! And the grade should be around 5.13a and 5.13c? / 7C+ and 8a+? Even if it's very steep! A lot more than it looks like told me Steve Mac Clure who gave me a belay!

What about the name? Do you like it?

Flash back October 11, 2007

Last week I had fun kayaking and climbing in Cajas Ecuador (close to Cuenca).

Last WE 6th October 07, teaching Ice climbing mountaineering to a nice Lady Manuela Picq on Chimborazo, 6320m: she learn how to make his first belay an his first "abalakov"...

But late and not enough acclimated, we stop climb around 5800m.

Global warming is in process this mountain is in very bad conditions: so dry that you climb only on hundred years old hard ice...

Take really care if you make an attempt on this mountain.







Then Flying to Louisville through Miami and Dallas, for Petzl Rock Trip Red River Gorge, Kentucky. I was in the plane with my friend Chevi Crespo up to Miami, one of the best Ecuadorian climbers on the go to study in Spain. Cool time ;-)

Then I cruised on the road on a nice Dodge rental car in an American dream...

Country music to help dreaming... feel how sweet is life...

Lucky I am... On the road to the Rock Trip...

Red River Gorge US Petzl RocTrip October 11, 2007

Here in the deep Kentucky

So deep, so far, but fit and fun, it's very exciting to be there with so many good climbers.

First day climbing in "Drive By" sector with my friends Dani Andrada, Tony Lamiche, Mickael Fuselier, Gérôme Pouvreau and Fred Labreveu from (grimper French

magazine)...

But because I focus my training for the world championship in Spain tow weeks ago, I’m very bad climbing on those 40meters long routes.

Anyway, the rock is wonderful there...

I had to find a new activity or not fit enough I would do only half routes today :o(

Thanks to Matt, a very local climber, I could borrow every thing to bolt a new rout in a very nice line (Bob Marley Wall): drill, beat, hammer, 17 key, and bolts...

There is no interruption holds and it suppose to be very hard: 5.14a / 8b+ minimum! It's very steep, holds are small and far... I hope to post pictures tomorrow ;-)

And let's finish the job may be with Dani who is in a rest day.

I propose "El Encuentro" to name this route borning!? What do you think about it?

I wait for your suggestions 'cause I’m looking for something may be more "American"?
